Legal Adviser (Assistant Secretary) The Department of Foreign Affairs The mission of the Department of Foreign Affairs is to serve the Irish people, promote their values and advance their prosperity and interests abroad, and to provide the Government with the capabilities, analysis and influence to ensure that Ireland derives the maximum benefit from all areas of its external engagement. The Department’s Legal Division provides legal advice on public international law, human rights law and European Union law as it relates to foreign policy, and issues of domestic law particular to the Department; leads on international legal policy on international humanitarian law, international criminal justice and the law of the sea; represents Ireland in international legal proceedings and in legal committees in international organisations; carries out functions with respect to extradition and mutual legal assistance; and administers the Department’s Treaty Office. The Legal Adviser provides advice and assistance to the Minister for Foreign Affairs to ensure that Irish foreign policy is formulated and interpreted in a manner consistent with Ireland's international legal obligations, having regard to the relevant sources of international law, including treaty obligations and appropriate policy goals. It is a diverse, challenging and interesting role, working to protect and advance Ireland’s values and interests.  The successful candidate will: • Have been called to the Bar or be enrolled as a Solicitor in the State; • Be a citizen of Ireland; • Have practiced as a Barrister or Solicitor for eight years or otherwise have acquired eight years post-qualification experience relevant to the position;  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge of public international law; • Demonstrate good knowledge of Irish, EU and human rights law; • Have a record of achievement in their career to date, demonstrating well developed management and leadership skills, and the ability to provide effective leadership and direction in a complex organisation; • Have, or have the ability to quickly acquire, a good understanding of Irish public administration as well as knowledge of the policy context and current issues connected with Ireland’s international relations.
