The Department of Health’s vision is a healthier Ireland, with improved health and wellbeing for all, and with the right care delivered in the right place at the right time.  The Department is engaged in an ambitious and wide-ranging programme of reform under the umbrella of Sláintecare, the ten year plan for the health service.   The position of Chief Medical Officer is a pivotal and influential one which has a leading role shaping national policy and services.   Reporting to the Secretary General and serving as an integral member of the senior management team, the role of the Chief Medical Officer includes:    • providing structured and strategic evidence-based advice on medical, ethical and public health matters in relation to Departmental policy priorities to the Minister and the Department;     • providing leadership and strategic direction for the national public health response to the Covid-19 pandemic;   • overseeing and supporting ongoing public health reform initiatives in the wider health service;   • providing expert medical evidence, analysis and advice, especially on public health matters;   • leading and managing the Department’s team of Deputy Chief Medical Officers;   • overseeing ongoing public health reform initiatives.   Person Specification:    The person appointed will ideally demonstrate:    • the medical expertise, experience and authority to perform the functions of the post;   • a strong results focus and track record of previous achievements and leadership at a senior medical level in a challenging environment;   • proven ability to think strategically in the analysis, development and implementation of policy actions;   • Strong relationship management and a highly developed ability to negotiate and influence.   Candidates must, on or before 30th June 2022.   • hold a specialist medical qualification from a recognised Irish post-graduate training body or the recognised equivalent of such a qualification;   • be registered, or be entitled to be registered, on the Specialist Division of the register of Comhairle na nDochtúirí Leighis (the Medical Council);   • have had, since becoming entitled to full registration (i.e. after successful completion of internship), at least ten years’ satisfactory experience in the practice of medicine.   This is a Top Level Appointments Committee (TLAC) position.     Further information on this significant opportunity, including details on how to apply, is available on www.publicjobs.ie    If you feel you would benefit from a confidential discussion about this role, contact Emer Grenville on emer.grenville@publicjobs.ie    The closing date for receipt of completed applications is 15:00 on Thursday 30th June 2022.    We are committed to a policy of equal opportunity and encourage applications under all nine grounds of the Employment Equality Act.   For further information in relation to the Department of Health please consult www.gov.ie/health.
