ARTISTIC DIRECTOR  -  CIVIC THEATRE The Board of the Civic Theatre Ltd is seeking an outstanding and talented individual for the position of Artistic Director who will lead the theatre with passion, invention, and dedication to new levels of artistic achievement. S/he will have the courage and originality to lead the theatre in his/her distinctive way while remaining true to its mission and five-year business plan 2022-2026. The Artistic Director reports to the Board of Directors and is responsible for ensuring the theatre achieves its artistic, audience and financial objectives. The Civic is supported by South Dublin County Council and the Arts Council of Ireland / An Chomhairle Ealaíon. It is a registered charity. Responsibilities. Artistic. To provide strong, inspirational, and high-profile leadership to enable the Civic to achieve its artistic and strategic objectives within a changing cultural and commercial environment. To create an integrated programme of innovative, high-quality theatre, dance, opera, and music from a diverse range of sources/partners from Ireland and abroad, including in-house productions, co-productions & tours. To mentor, support and promote the Civic’s wide range of associate artists and resident companies. To work closely and collaboratively with all relevant departments and partners to further develop the widest possible audience for the Civic’s wide range of activities, particularly amongst those people living in South Dublin County and its environs, and to champion its commitment to accessibility and affordability. Creative and entrepreneurial leadership. To initiate and develop artistic and educational collaborations and creative partnerships to help it achieve its ambitions. To broaden and diversify the sources of income including, through fund-raising, exploitation of the artistic programme and other opportunities such as capital development. To lead and develop strong and productive relationships with The Arts Council of Ireland, South Dublin County Council, the theatre industry, the media and other existing and potential partners to enhance the Civic’s profile and activities within Ireland and internationally. Organisational and financial. To oversee and ensure the effective, responsible, and solvent financial management. To ensure and implement staffing structures that are responsive to emerging needs and conducive to effective team working. To oversee the recruitment, professional development, working conditions, management, and regular performance appraisal of all full-time staff. To attend and report at meetings of the Board of Directors; Essential Skills and experience required. Proven track record of a minimum of 3 years in a senior executive role with either an art centre or other incorporated body in the performing arts. Excellent knowledge and understanding of the performing arts sector in Ireland. Experience of managing change, including restructuring, process innovation and new technology adoption would be a distinct advantage. Clarity of artistic vision and ambition, with a passion for contemporary performing arts that explores and addresses a wide range of issues as well as being engaging and entertaining. Proven ability to attract and collaborate with companies and artists of the highest calibre. A demonstrable passion, knowledge and experience for/of programming for young people and clear commitment to giving youth a voice in the development and programming of new work. Contract: Contract will be for an initial 12-month period from date of appointment, with a view to extending the contract for a further period as required by the Board. A 10 (ten) week notice period will apply.  A 6 Month Probationary period will apply with an initial six-month review by the Board.
