Description

The Office of Legal Costs Adjudicators is a new statutory office established in October 2019 under Part 10 of the Legal Services Regulation Act, 2015. It provides an independent and impartial process of assessment of legal costs, which involves examining the nature and extent of any work done by counsel, solicitors or by expert witnesses and determining a fair level of allowable costs. As part of the Government’s commitment to provide for transparency in the area of legal costs, the Office will, in addition to undertaking those processes previously undertaken by the Taxing Masters’ Office, establish and maintain a register of determinations of applications for adjudication of legal costs. Candidates are required to possess strong technical legal expertise to undertake adjudication of legal costs in a timely and effective manner. Candidates should ideally have experience of effectively managing public hearings, a detailed knowledge of fair procedures, administrative law and the ability to write effective written determinations. The ideal candidate will have a comprehensive understanding of the courts structure, court procedure and the litigation process, and of the statutory regime and jurisprudence relating to the assessment of legal costs. The successful candidate will have: • Practised as a solicitor for a period of not less than 10 years; or. • Practised as a barrister for a period of not less than 10 years; or. • Practised as a legal cost accountant for a period of not less than 10 years.
