The National Botanic Gardens, Glasnevin is Ireland’s leading botanical and horticultural institution, which cultivates a comprehensive collection of plants for scientific research, conservation, education and display.   The National Botanic Gardens within The Office of Public Works (OPW) manages Kilmacurragh Arboretum in Co. Wicklow and the John F. Kennedy Arboretum in Co. Wexford as an integral part of the National Botanic Gardens. The OPW is now recruiting the position of Herbarium Assistant   Reporting to the Taxonomist, the successful candidate will be responsible for keeping the herbarium in good order, curating the collections, and assisting the Taxonomist, where appropriate, with the taxonomic and conservation programmes of the National Botanic Gardens.   The role also involves assisting in maintaining the invaluable National Herbarium collection which consists of approximately 660,000 specimens from diverse parts of the world. The specimens represent all of the major plant groups with collections of wood, seeds, fruits nd plant products. You will also support the research staff and collaborate with the horticultural staff, guiding staff, library staff and visitors.   The ideal candidate will hold a qualification of at least Level 5 on the NFQ, with a proven scientific or biological element. S/he will have some experience in Botany, as well as excellent communication skills - both written and verbal, with excellent organisational sklls, computer literacy and an aptitude for managing computer information.
