Description

The Mental Health Act 2001 (as amended) provides for the independent review of people involuntarily admitted to approved centres (hospitals). Under the Act, the Mental Health Commission is notified of each involuntary admission and each order made while a person is detained involuntarily. The Mental Health Commission refers each order of detention to a Mental Health Tribunal for review. The Mental Health Tribunal consists of 3 members, a Barrister/Solicitor, a Consultant Psychiatrist and a Lay Member in accordance with Section 48(3) (a)(b) and (c) of the Act. Mental Health Tribunals sit in approved centres in accordance with statutory time limits. In addition, a Report from an Independent Consultant Psychiatrist is prepared and submitted to the Mental Health Tribunal in each case in accordance with Section 33(3)(b) of the Act. The Public Appointments Service has been requested by the Mental Health Commission to seek expressions of interest from individuals who wish to be considered for inclusion on the following panels: • Consultant Psychiatrists for Mental Health Tribunals and Independent Medical Examiners. Experience and/or understanding of mental health services shall be required of applicants.  .
