Overall Purpose: The Packaging Engineer role will provide site subject matter expertise in mechanical systems used in sterile filling and secondary packaging. Working closely with process and automation engineering colleagues the Packaging Engineer will play a leading role in ensuring the site’s manufacturing system start-up is right first time through the commissioning, qualification and validation phases. On commencement of commercial operations, the packaging engineer will lead the site’s mechanical performance efforts to ensure sterile filling and secondary packaging performance meets site targets with a strong focus on continuous improvement. Essential Duties, Functions and Responsibilities: Works with manufacturing and quality colleagues as part of an Operations team whose shared goal is to realise the safety, quality, delivery and cost objectives of the site. Prioritises safety and is diligent in the use of all appropriate safety tools and permits when maintaining equipment – champions safe working always. Site SME in mechanical systems’ performance and improvement including: Primary packaging: SME for the sterile filling line’s mechanical performance ensuring high component handling performance with repeatable container closure within a grade A isolator. Secondary packaging: Mechanical lead in the operation, maintenance and performance of conveying systems, labelling, cartooning, palletisation, etc. Represent Packaging Operations on the site’s New Product Introduction team and lead NPI and Technology Transfer activity in Packaging. Support the design of the operational systems required to ensure packaging meets the performance requirements of the site across safety, quality, delivery and cost. Ensure a lean mindset is designed into operational and engineering personnel within packaging to minimise packaging downtime, human errors and to optimise area performance. Lead Athlone engagement with colleagues within the wider organisation on packaging related issues. Build maintenance plans and equipment supplier relationships necessary to delivery on the expected level of equipment performance. Understand packaging quality requirements and lead preparation for regulatory audits within the Packaging area. Work with partners and company stakeholders to design, build and operate serialisation and aggregation technology in line with the company’s serialisation strategy. Provides technical support for product PPRs (Periodic Product Review) from a Packaging perspective. Supports manufacturing by leading/supporting deviation investigations, and is familiar with structured problem solving and root cause analysis. Supports validation activity as required. Supports capital projects throughout equipment lifecycle. Skills/Knowledge Required: Strong technical knowledge of packaging equipment, packaging materials and packaging operations design. Track record of supporting packaging line operation and maintenance. Strong experience of engineering principles of structure problem solving, program management, maintenance systems design. Understanding of pharmaceutical industry regulatory requirements as they apply to packaging. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Highly motivated with ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary teams or independently. Strong team player with proactive approach & manner. Education Required : Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (ideally mechanical/manufacturing/packaging. Experience Required: 5+ years relevant experience in a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment, though consideration will be given to experienced and excellent engineers who have worked in other manufacturing industries that use similar technologies.
